Whether you travel frequently for work, love to jetset around the world, or are planning an exciting vacation for your family, travel miles can be a great way to get you where you want to go. With a miles-earning credit card such as the card_name card, you can rack up valuable rewards on your everyday spending that can then be redeemed for any number of travel-related expenses.

The card_name card is a fee-free travel credit card with a set rewards earning rate, no matter where you spend or what you buy. Read on to learn more about this card, what it offers, and who might want to keep it in their wallet.

Who is the card for?

The card_name card is a great option for applicants with good (or better) credit who want a versatile travel credit card without having to declare allegiance to specific airlines or hotel brands. Instead, Discover Miles can be redeemed for any travel purchases in the form of a statement credit, whether you want to pay for airfare, hotels, cruises, theme-park tickets, rental cars, or any other travel-related product.

Donโ€™t have any travel expenses one month? No worries. You can also redeem card_name (at the same redemption rate) toward anything else you charged to your card throughout the month.

Additionally, the card is a worthwhile option for anyone who doesnโ€™t want to worry about tracking revolving rewards. There are no opt-in quarterly bonus categories to remember; you earn the same amount back on every purchase.

Lastly, this is a good card for a traveler who doesnโ€™t require too many frills and wants to avoid paying a premium. The card_name has no annual fee, which can mean hundreds of dollars saved each year over some of the top travel credit cards. It doesnโ€™t offer any deluxe benefits, such as airport lounge access, but for those most interested in saving money, this might not matter.

Features

Though generally a no-frills card, the card_name does have its enticements, including:

Rewards

The card_name card is a great introductory product in the travel credit card space. With no annual fee, 1.5x miles on every purchase, and a 15-month 0% introductory annual percentage rate (APR) offer for purchases and balance transfers, it checks many of the most important boxes.

Hereโ€™s a look at what the card_name offers, who itโ€™s best for, and what you can expect if you carry this card in your wallet.

TIMEโ€™s Take

Whether youโ€™re looking to jump into the miles-and-points game for upcoming travel plans or simply want a credit card with a straightforward rewards structure, the card_name is probably worth a look. Like many Discover credit cards, it has no annual fee and offers to match all of the miles you earn in the first year. It also has a solid redemption structure and lengthy intro_apr_rate,intro_apr_duration on purchases and balance_transfer_intro_apr,balance_transfer_intro_durationbalance transfers.

While it canโ€™t hold a candle to the premium travel benefits offered by many of the top-end travel credit cards, itโ€™s important to remember that it doesnโ€™t come at the same cost. However, applicants will still need good to excellent credit to qualify.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • No annual fee
  • Flat 1.5x miles on every dollar spent
  • Get preapproved without affecting your credit

Cons:

  • No welcome bonus
  • Miles have the same value no matter how theyโ€™re redeemed
  • No transfer partners for amplified redemptions

Every dollar spent on the card_name earns 1.5x miles, regardless of the spending category. As stated above, there are no bonus categories, which can be both an advantage (in terms of not tracking spending or enrolling in quarterly rewards) and a disadvantage (in that you wonโ€™t earn more than 1.5x miles).

Rewards can be easily redeemed as a statement credit for travel purchases or as cash. Eligible travel purchases include airfare, hotels, rideshares, gas stations, and restaurants, among others. Your redemption rate is one cent per mile in all cases (100 miles equals $1). You can also redeem miles in any quantity at any time, with no minimums required.

Finally, there is the cardโ€™s Discover Match feature. Your total miles earnings for the first year will be doubled at yearโ€™s end. This means you effectively earn 3x miles per dollar spent over the course of your first 12 months.

Introductory 0% APR financing

The card_name has a 15-month introductory 0% APR offer on both purchases and balance transfers. With this offer you can pay off large purchases over time without incurring finance charges. You can also consolidate existing balances (such as credit card debt) and pay it all off with no additional interest. Just make sure you do it before the 15 months are up. Any balance remaining on the card after that will incur interest charges, which can quickly mount up.

The fine print

Discover is known for its limited credit card fees, and the Discover it Miles is no exception. For starters, it has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee.

Of the four fees that it does charge, the first two in the following list can be avoided completely with responsible use of the card.

  1. late_payment_fee. This fee of up to $41 is waived the first time you miss a payment deadline.
  2. Returned payment fee. Also up to $41.
  3. balance_transfer_fees. This is 3% for an introductory period, then it changes to 5%.
  4. cash_advance_fee. This is either $10 or 5% of the advance, whichever is greater.

There is also the cost of those reg_apr,reg_apr_type when you carry a balance. Your APR may range anywhere from 17.24% to 28.24% variable (based on your creditworthiness). Cash advances are subject to an even higher APR of 29.99% variable. However, there is no penalty APR.

Additional hidden perks

In addition to everything mentioned above, the card_name comes with a handful of other perks.

Free FICO score

Discover will provide you with a free FICO credit score each month, as well as alerts when big changes appear on your credit reports. This data comes from TransUnion, one of the three main credit bureaus (the other two are Experian and Equifax), so it may be different from the score (and info) offered to lenders by the other bureaus. Still, it can give you a baseline from which to track your progress.

Discover Identity Alerts

Daily Identity Alerts monitor your Experian credit report and tell you when important activity occurs. This could include new accounts and credit inquiries, as well as alerts when your information is found in a dark web search.

What could be improved

Itโ€™s hard to complain about a no-annual-fee travel credit card with solid rewards and redemption options. Still, thereโ€™s always room for improvement.

The card_name โ€™s travel protections are in dire need of help. As most travel credit cards are aimed at frequent travelers, they usually provide a number of protections when the cardholder is away from home. These include trip delay or cancellation coverage, baggage insurance, even rental car coverage. card_name offers none of these.

Also, the lack of any welcome bonus is unalluring.

Bottom line

The card_name is a solid introductory credit card for those interested in earning travel rewards. With 1.5x miles per dollar spent on all purchases, regardless of category, it offers simplicity to cardholders. Rewards redemption is also straightforward, and new cardholders can enjoy double rewards at the end of the first year. If you plan to make big purchases or want to consolidate existing debt, the 0% APR offer for the first 15 months will make doing that less costly. Finally, the card has minimal fees (including no annual one).
