While memory foam mattresses can initially feel comfortable, after a while, you may find the material runs hot and lacks support, potentially leading to back pain and overall discomfort. Since developing a back condition that causes severe low-back arthritis, I haven’t found a memory foam mattress that offers the support I need. Initially, the pressure reduction of memory foam feels great, but after a few hours, I find myself sinking into the mattress, increasing my pain. Since I sleep mostly on my side, that lack of support causes improper spinal alignment and can lead to so much pain that it’s difficult to get out of bed the next morning.

Tempur-Pedic takes a different approach to the traditional memory foam mattress with the Tempur-Pedic Adapt Hybrid Mattress. The Adapt Hybrid mattress combines the pressure relieving properties of TEMPUR-Material with the support of coils. The result is a mattress that gives me the support I need while still allowing me to enjoy the pressure-relieving benefits of memory foam. I was surprised to discover just how comfortably I slept on this mattress, and think that it’s ideal for side sleepers, those with back pain, and more.

Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress design

I tested the Tempur-Pedic Adapt Hybrid Mattress, which has a three-layer construction and measures 11 inches tall. The base layer consists of over 1,000 spring coils, supporting easier movement.

The support layer consists of TEMPUR-Material, which Tempur-Pedic states was created by NASA to cushion pilots. According to Tempur-Pedic, this material relieves pressure, conforms, and absorbs motion more than traditional memory foam.

The support layer is topped by a comfort layer of TEMPUR-Material that conforms to your body’s weight.

Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress firmness

The Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress is only available in a medium firmness. I tested the medium hybrid model, though the mattress is also available as a medium model made entirely of TEMPUR-Material.

If you’re looking for additional firmness options, the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt and LuxeAdapt mattresses are available in soft, medium, and firm options.

When I ran my hand over the hybrid mattress, I found it initially felt softer than a medium firmness, thanks to the upper layers of the TEMPUR-Material. The material is soft and compresses easily under pressure, but once I lay on the bed, it felt consistent with a medium firmness.

Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress support and comfort

I found the Tempur-Pedic Adapt Hybrid Mattress to be very comfortable and supportive. The top layers of TEMPUR-Material feel like a dense memory foam mattress. They contour to my body's shape and don’t create pressure points. I mostly sleep on my side and didn’t experience any pressure on my hip or shoulder, which has been a problem in the past with some previous innerspring mattresses.

Anytime a mattress has a very soft upper layer, I worry about lack of support. I have significant lower back pain, and sleeping on an unsupportive mattress can make that pain much worse by the morning or can even cause me to wake up repeatedly. That wasn’t an issue with the Tempur-Pedic Adapt Hybrid Mattress.

While the top layers conform, the support layer of coils delivers an impressive amount of support, and I never felt like I was sinking in too deeply. I was pleased to find that I could easily move and turn over on the mattress, and I didn’t experience any increase in lower back pain.

While the mattress was supportive enough to keep me comfortable while sleeping, I found that it significantly lacked edge support. When I sat on the edge, I compressed the mattress nearly in half. The top layers of TEMPUR-Material compressed completely, and I believe that the springs were the only source of support. I was able to still get into and out of bed easily, but the lack of support could be an issue for anyone who depends on using the mattress edge to help themselves into and out of bed.

Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress performance

I’ve tested the mattress for nearly a month, and it has performed impressively well during that time. During my testing, Massachusetts experienced a week of temperatures close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Though my bedroom temperature was uncomfortable, I never felt like the mattress resulted in heat buildup. While the top layers are soft and I do sink into them a bit, the hybrid design is supportive overall, and I feel that the mattress sleeps cool.

I was also impressed to find that the mattress is completely silent. There were no creaking sounds, and I couldn’t hear the coils compress or expand at all when I moved around or got into and out of bed. As a result, it could be a great choice for couples.

The mattress also has minimal motion transfer. I tested it by placing a glass of water on the surface, then bounced my hand against the mattress at various points. I was able to see the motion transfer to the water once I got within about 18 inches of the glass.

Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress delivery and setup

The Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress was shipped via FragilePAK. Once the mattress was on its way, I received an email prompting me to schedule a delivery day. There was only one day available, about two weeks out, and I was able to easily schedule the delivery online.

The mattress included White Glove delivery. I received an estimated timeframe for the delivery, and then the driver called about a half hour before arriving.

The delivery process was incredibly fast. Two men unloaded the mattress from the truck, walked it down my driveway on a hand truck, unboxed it in front of the house, and carried it into my bedroom, which is on the first floor of my home. They removed the protective plastic and placed the mattress on the bed. The entire process took about three minutes.

The mattress had a very faint plastic-like odor, but that dissipated within a few hours. When I slept on the mattress that night, I didn’t smell anything.

Is the Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress for you?

The Tempur-Pedic Adapt Hybrid Mattress combines pressure relief and support, making it suitable for many types of sleepers. As a side sleeper, I found that it worked very well and kept me very comfortable. Thanks to the softer upper layers paired with the support of the coils, I could also see it working well for back and even stomach sleepers. Since the mattress is so quiet and helps prevent motion transfer, it could also be a good fit for couples.

However, the mattress has minimal edge support, so it’s important to consider how much you use the edges of the bed when getting into or out of bed. Because the edges compress so much, this mattress might not be a good choice for anyone with mobility challenges or difficulty standing up when they get out of bed.

What sets the Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress apart from other mattresses?

The Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress offers excellent pressure relief and features the support of an innerspring. It includes a 90-day trial, giving you a chance to try it in your home, as well as a 10-year warranty, which is on the longer side of a mattress warranty.

The fact that White Glove delivery is included with select mattress purchases is a major perk, too, and makes the setup process fast and easy. Generally, this type of delivery is a premium service, and many mattress brands charge for it, so its inclusion with the Tempur-Pedic mattress purchase is a bonus.

Other mattresses from Tempur-Pedic

In addition to the Tempur-Adapt collection, Tempur-Pedic offers three other mattress collections:

  • The Tempur-Cloud combines TEMPUR-Material with a foam base layer for support and pressure reduction.
  • The Tempur-Breeze uses materials like cooling fibers to help keep you cooler and more comfortable while you sleep.
  • The Tempur-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed features dual climate control so you can personalize your sleep experience.

All of these mattresses are available in multiple sizes, so they’re an option whether you’re looking for a twin or queen mattress. Tempur-Pedic also sells pillows and mattress toppers.

Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress FAQs

What’s the difference between the Tempur-Adapt and the Tempur-ProAdapt mattress?

The Tempur-Adapt mattress is only available in medium firmness and measures 11 inches high. You’ll enjoy more options with the ProAdapt mattress, which offers additional pressure relief and measures 12 inches high. It features a removable, washable cover and is available in soft, medium, and firm options.

Is the Tempur-Pedic Adapt good for side sleepers?

Mattresses for side sleepers need to offer cushion and support, which the Tempur-Pedic Hybrid Adapt does well. The TEMPUR-Material helps to prevent pressure points, like the shoulder and hip, which are common issues for side sleepers. At the same time, the coils create support to help prevent you from feeling like you sink in too deeply, maximizing comfort.

Is the Tempur-Pedic Adapt good for back pain?

I live with lower back pain and found that the Tempur-Pedic Hybrid Adapt helped keep me comfortable while I slept. The coils create enough support to keep my lower back well-aligned, whereas softer mattresses or mattresses made entirely of foam lack support and can make my back pain worse.

What is the difference between Tempur-Pedic Cloud and Adapt?

The Tempur-Pedic Cloud measures 10 inches high, while the Adapt is 11 inches high. Additionally, the Adapt mattress is designed to provide more conforming support than the Cloud.

Final verdict

The Tempur-Pedic Adapt Hybrid Mattress is not only supportive but also offers excellent pressure relief. I found it very comfortable while sleeping on my side and was pleased to discover it provides the support I need because of lower back issues. While it lacks edge support, it prevents motion transfer well and sleeps completely quietly, making it a practical option for couples as well as those who sleep alone.

The 90-day trial gives you the chance to test out the mattress in your home, and the White Glove delivery makes for a fast and easy installation. I’ve been very impressed with everything from the ease of the delivery to the mattress’ overall performance and comfort.
