A worn-out mattress—or one not suited to your sleep style—can disrupt not only your rest but how you feel all day. If you wake up feeling sore or with allergies that don’t coincide with your normal seasonal reactions, it’s very likely time to invest in a new mattress. In the past, the majority of mattresses featured an innerspring support system. Fancier versions have plush pillow tops of varying thicknesses and firmness. While these types still exist (Saavta makes an excellent one), many mattresses are now made from memory foam, which contours to your body shape and those made of a combination of the two.
Quality mattresses offer things like hypoallergenic covers and cooling technologies. They should come in a range of softness levels so you can purchase one that works for your body type and weight. With more features and premium materials, mattresses can end up being pricey, some costing upward of $3,000 or $4,000. Good sleep, though, is worth investing in if you have the means. Black Friday sales make it easier for many of us to purchase our ideal premium mattress.

In 2024, Black Friday falls on November 29th, the day following Thanksgiving in the U.S. Traditionally, retailers offer deep discounts and sales on this first “official” day of the holiday shopping season. Many online retailers start their sales at 12:01 AM on Friday and continue them through the end of the day on the following Monday (now known as Cyber Monday). Many sales may even remain in effect for the entire week or more but most are only as long as supplies last so if there is something you really want it's best to have a plan.
Black Friday is one of the best times to buy a mattress. Most Black Friday sales include discounts between 20% and 35%, while some offer savings up to 50%. Many retailers also throw in gifts such as free bedding or free white-glove delivery (which includes special handling and possible set up) if they don’t already offer it.
Most major mattress brands ran a sale that included discounts from 20% to 50%. As mentioned above, many also include the option for free bedding with purchase. Major big-box and online retail stores like Walmart and Wayfair also conduct Black Friday deals with attractive sale prices on all sorts of things, including mattresses. Department stores like Macy’s also hold sales.
If you know which brand of mattress you’re most interested in purchasing, consider signing up for their email list. This will ensure you know about upcoming sales and deals. Some mattress manufacturers known for high-quality products include Tempur-pedic, Saavta, Nectar, Helix and Blink Beds.
I create a Google Alert for each deal category I’m interested in. To make your very own, go to https://www.google.com/alerts and enter your criteria in the text box. “Check options” allows you to choose how you receive notifications, language, and whether to include all results as opposed to best results. I set mine to one email digest per day and all results so I can peruse and decide which item or deal is “best” for me as opposed to Google.
Use your Google search bar to compare deals at multiple retailers. Type in the specific item, click on the shopping button under the search bar and you’ll get a list with pictures and prices clearly notated to multiple sites at which you can purchase said item. This allows you to quickly compare prices at a range of stores. Read all product descriptions carefully before purchasing, though, because sometimes results will include variations on a model or even an entirely different model than what you searched for.
Most people shop for a new mattress when they need one, which is the best way to go about it. So is deciding what kind best suits your needs before checking out the sales. A good mattress helps you sleep better. What makes a particular mattress good varies from person to person.
Levels of mattress support can vary greatly from very soft to very firm. Consider what firmness level works for you and your body and make sure whichever you choose also features temperature regulation or breathability. It’s important to be able to test mattresses for back pain and mattresses for side sleepers and many companies offer “sleep trials.” In addition, pay attention to return policies and warranties so you can return if needed.
Mattresses come in a range of materials like memory foam, hybrid designs, innerspring, and latex. Depending on your preferences, one may be better for you than others. For instance, memory foam, while known for its ability to conform to the curves of your body, can hold onto body heat making it an uncomfortable choice for those who sleep hot. Some memory foam mattress options include cooling gel foam or temperature regulating covers to help mitigate this effect.
Constructed with a foam layer over inner-springs, hybrid mattresses provide a middle-ground choice for people who don’t want—or like—the full sink-into-the-bed feeling of most foam mattresses but like the contouring ability of them. On another note, if you suffer from allergies, look for hypoallergenic mattresses.
