They say you should always dress for the occasion—and since the best things in life are almost exclusively enjoyed in a horizontal position, that means getting your jammies on. Whether you run hot, cold, or anywhere in between, there’s something on our list of the best pajamas for men to suit you. And remember, even those who prefer to sleep with nothing on at all need something to throw on before answering the front door. (Honestly, the mailman insists.)
Two quick ways to drift off to sleep: Be comfortable, and don’t lie there worrying about spending too much. You can kill both birds with one stone when you wear Hanes’ wallet- and bed-friendly PJs, the brand that already makes some of the best joggers and men's workout shirts. Soft, warm, and available in a small range of classic pajama-y plaids, these will get the job done for a fraction of the price of many comparable sets.
If you’ve ever had sheets so comfortable you just wanted to wrap yourself up in them, meet the next best thing. These simple but super-soft cotton PJs are made by beloved luxury bedding brand Brooklinen, so even if you’re spending a day on the couch, you’ll feel like you’re still tucked up in bed.
Whether it’s a chilly winter night, or your partner has simply turned the air conditioning to “arctic tundra” again, these cozy flannel jammies will keep you comfortable. Featuring a relaxed fit for even easier sprawling, they’re soft, yet durable. They’re also an especially good choice for taller dudes, since they’re available in a range of inseam lengths, from 30 inches to 34 inches.
You might know this brand better for its lingerie, but if you feel like you also deserve to be seductively draped in silk at bedtime, these are worth checking out. Made from fine silk and designed with a classic but fitted shape, they perfectly straddle the line between, “I am an attractive, sexual being,” and, “I like to be insanely comfortable while binging an entire season of something in bed.”
They’re called Second Skin for a reason—reviews rave about how comfortable these PJs are. Made of stretchable, incredibly soft modal fabric (a more eco-friendly alternative to cotton, derived from beech trees), they’re a good pick for men who generally don’t like to wear jammies, but are required to on occasion (say, when staying at someone else’s place). Whether you’re grabbing an early night or spending a hungover day in front of the TV, you can be confident your PJ’s won’t spoil it for you.
Petite Plume has several cute printed options (being a Brit who moved to the East Coast, I like both the brand’s London is Calling and New York! New York! sets), but it’s tough to argue with the fun simplicity of these old-school hot-air balloons. Just like their pattern, the pajamas themselves are soft, light, and perfect for gently drifting off.
“Absurdly soft” and “blessedly warm” are pretty much Ugg’s two defining features, and that’s certainly what you get with their pajamas. Finding the right balance between relaxed and snug, you’ll stay cozy in these no matter what kind of blizzard is howling outside. Top it off with Ugg’s Robinson robe and Tasman slippers and you may decide never to wear your regular clothes again.
Few things will wreck your sleep like overheating, thrashing around in a sweaty mess, and trying to kick off the covers. Help avoid that by slipping on these barely-there PJs made of breathable, silky TENCEL modal fabric. Designed to help regulate your temperature while you sleep, they’re going to be the first thing you reach for on hot summer nights (after that pitcher of ice water, obviously).
If you’re planning on actually sleeping in pajamas, rather than just throwing them on for breakfast, you need something designed for the purpose. “For optimal sleep performance, real pajamas—reserved for sleeping—are ideal,” says Better Sleep Council representative, Terry Cralle, RN. “Don't sleep in athletic clothes or street clothes.” That means considering your personal needs (do you run hot? Find some materials itchy?) and choosing accordingly.
You may be surprised that the materials that comprise the best quality pajamas for women are also available for men’s styles. “There are many options of pajama fabrics—silk, flannel, linen, cotton, even cashmere,” says Cralle. “So choose what feels best for you and your sleep style. Choose loose-fitting pajamas that aren't constricting and don't trap heat. You will want to avoid synthetic fabrics, which trap heat and moisture.”
It’s a personal preference, based on where, when, and how you sleep. That said, cotton is a good place to start. “Cotton is lightweight, soft to the touch, breathable, and often non-irritating to many,” says Cralle. “This allows for air circulation, and doesn't tend to irritate the skin.”
Again, this is pretty subjective, but cotton will work for a lot of people, depending on your circumstances. “Cotton does not do a good job of insulating and may make you cold if worn in a cooler climate without adequate blankets,” warns Cralle. “High-thread count cotton pajamas are a good choice in warmer weather, as it allows the skin to breathe.”
You may also want to consider a different option if you find yourself sweating heavily at night. “Cotton is inefficient at wicking away moisture, so if you experience night sweats, it may not be the best choice,” says Cralle.
