In January 2025, TIME hosted an exclusive forum in Davos, bringing together influential business leaders from diverse industries to explore the crucial role of innovation in driving meaningful change. The event, titled TIME100 Talks – Innovating for Impact: Pioneering Solutions for a Better World, featured an engaging one-on-one conversation between TIME’s CEO, Jess Sibley, and Christos Harpantidis, Senior Vice President of External Affairs at Philip Morris International (PMI).

The discussion began with an examination of the complex dynamics between innovation, regulation, and ethical standards, highlighting the challenge of finding balance amid often conflicting forces. Sibley asked Harpantidis about the public debate on the risks and benefits associated with innovation and technology and whether this debate is leading to missed opportunities. With a thoughtful reflection, Harpantidis explained, “Innovation is often controversial. It takes time to see how consumers and society respond, and how world leaders or regulators choose to handle it. Because of this, there are definitely missed opportunities, as progress can be delayed or hindered by resistance or uncertainty.”

The conversation also touched on the groundbreaking innovations in AI and breakthroughs in other sectors that are shaping and expanding the boundaries of our work. Harpantidis noted, “We cannot really discuss innovation without talking about how we will bring this innovation in a meaningful way, in a way that is fair and accessible to all.” “Many of these breakthroughs touch upon so many areas of business, the economy, and society, but it’s the convergence of different innovations that will make the real difference,” he added.

Harpantidis emphasized the importance of openness and transparency in driving progress through innovation. He stated, "This is the job of everyone to share with openness, with transparency, inviting dialogue and being able to have a transparent debate around the same table, building trust among the stakeholders, which is extremely important for collaboration in order to progress."

Harpantidis reflected on the company’s progress toward achieving a smoke-free future. “Ten years ago, we made significant investments and changed our business model and culture to prove that this could happen. It was a bold and difficult goal, but we’ve made it a reality,” he explained. “It’s a higher purpose, which may have seemed like an impossible one when we started, but we are happy to say that it works.”

Sibley concluded on an optimistic note: “Ending on happy. I’m hopeful about happy.”
