Next month, Burke will leave her position as CPO of software company HubSpot after seven years of leading the organization’s people and culture strategy. In that time, the organization has collected accolade after accolade for its employee experience and company culture, and the company’s name has become synonymous with flexibility, autonomy, and transparency. In 2020, the HubSpot rolled out a formal flexible work policy that allows employees to choose from three flexible work arrangements: @home, @office, and @flex. Outside of her work at HubSpot, she has become an influential voice on all things human resources, with over 47,000 followers on LinkedIn and regular appearances in articles and webinars.

Right now, what is your biggest question or curiosity about the future of work?

My biggest question is how global mobility plays into the future of work—how companies infuse flexibility, not just in how people work but also where people are allowed to work. It’s an essential question from a logistics and time zone point of view, but also from an employee experience and learning vantage point.

What is one problem leaders should be focused on solving in the year ahead?

Creating a clear menu of expectations—a lot of the thrash around the future of work comes from the distance between employee expectations and those of managers and the company. Documenting what forms of flexibility exist and those that don’t long before someone onboards at your organization is the best way to ensure the future of work at your company feels more like a mutual agreement than a top-down mandate.
